Helmholtz-Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geoscience

The Helmholtz-Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geoscience was founded in 1992 as the national research institution for geosciences in Germany and is a member of the Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres. With currently more than 980 staff members, the GFZ combines all solid earth science fields including geodesy, geology, geophysics, mineralogy, palaeontology and geochemistry, in a multidisciplinary scientific and technical environment.
In order to furnish its operations around the globe and in space, GFZ maintains massive scientific infrastructures and platforms, including observatories, a modular Earth science infrastructure, the home base of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Programme (ICDP) with the Operational Support Group, the novel drilling InnovaRig, and the Centre for GeoInformation Technology CEGIT, to name the most relevant for this project.
Inside GFZ, substantial involvement of four different units can be stated in the TRIDEC-project, namely the CeGIT, the Centre for Tsunami Early Warning, the ICDP Operational Support Group, and the GeoLab Training and Education Centre.

Relevant project experience (most recent only):
The GFZ has participated in is actively involved in numerous FP6 and FP7 projects:
FP6 DEWS (Distant Early Warning System), FP6 TRANSFER (Tsunami Risk and Strategies for the European Region), FP6 SAFER (Seismic Early Warning for Europe), FP6 NERIES (Network of Research Infrastructures for European Seismology), FP6 GAGOS (Assessing and forward planning of the Geodetic and Geohazard Observing Systems for GMES applications), FP7 ConHaz (Cost of Natural Hazards), FP7 GEISER (Geothermal Energy Integrating Mitigation of Induced Seismicity in Reservoirs), FP7 SHARE (Seismic hazard harmonization in Europe).
The GFZ has furthermore developed and implemented a fully operational Tsunami Early Warning System for the Indian Ocean, in particular for the Indonesian archipelago (GITEWS – German Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System).

Specific role in TRIDEC:
The GFZ is leading the work packages for the overall Management and Project Coordination (WP1), the Natural Crisis Management (WP6) and the Project Dissemination and Exploitation (WP8). GFZ furthermore strongly assists to the End-User Requirements and Scenario definition (WP2) and all other work packages.
