Tutorial: Social Media & Natural Language Processing

Approximately 60 participants attended the 3-hour tutorial titled "Exploiting Social Media for Natural Language Processing: Bridging the Gap between Language-centric and Real-world Applications" at the annual international conference of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL).The conference took place on 4th August 2013 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Prof. Dr. Simone Ponzetto (University of Mannheim) and Dr. Andrea Zielinski (Fraunhofer IOSB) presented there the basics, theory and practical applications for Twitter analysis. In this context, the Tridec project was presented and a live demonstration of the tsunami early warning on the basis of social media was shown.

TRIDEC Drilling Summer Course

As part of the "Drilling Summer Course" of the University of Leoben JOANNEUM employees have presented the EU project "Tridec - Collaborative, Complex and Critical Decision Support in Evolving Crises". They brought their extensive, specially under this project earned knowledge on "real-time data analysis in drilling" closer to interested guests. The course took place July, 11th 2013.

The TRIDEC project organizes a Townhall Meeting at this years General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) on Monday, April 8 in Vienna on "Big data and software architecture meet geophysics and crisis management"

This session is aimed to present different early warning systems, independent of whether these deal with landslides, floods, tsunamis, earthquakes , droughts or meteorological events, to name a few only, but it gives special attention to tsunami warning systems since these have been responsible of the major catastrophes of the last decade. This session addresses among others main achievements of and future challenges for the architecture of warning systems. Relevant topics include but are not limited to:
- Integration of heterogeneous sensor systems
- Application of unconventional sensors for situation assessment and damage estimation, e.g. blogs, smartphone apps, and low cost mobile airborne sensors
- Process design of standard operational procedures in warning centres
- Integration of simulation systems for forecasting of processes as well as systematic testing of warning systems
- Message-based coordination of activities of warning centres in a system-of-systems environment, e.g. based on the Common Alerting Protocol (OASIS)
- Concepts of and best practices for the operation of complex multinational warning systems, e.g. utilisation of service level agreements (SLA) and IT Infrastructure Library procedures (ITIL)." more

The TRIDEC Project was honored with the IRM Global Risk Award 2013 in the category ‘Managing Risks across Boundaries‘.

The Institute of Risk Management (IRM) is the world‘s leading enterprise-wide risk education institute. As a non-for-profit organization, IRM believes in the importance of risk management and that investment in education and continual professional development leads to more effective risk management.

The award winners were revealed at the prestigious Grand Connaught Rooms in London on February 28, 2013, with around 350 leading international risk professionals attending.

The award was received by Martin Hammitzsch and Dorit Kerschke of the Centre of GeoInformation Technology (CeGIT).

The TRIDEC Project successfully competed against the Intel Corporation, SAP AG, Nest Investment Holdings, and Parsons Brinkerhoff that were also nominated in this category.

TRIDEC Framework successfully validated in NEAMWave2012 Exercise

The TRIDEC software framework has been deployed as a tsunami early warning system at the premises of the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) in Lissabon and the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KOERI) in Istanbul. Both institutes are partners in the TRIDEC project that is coordinated by the GFZ.

On November 27–28, 2012, two scenarios in the European-wide Tsunami exercise NEAMWave2012 were successfully accomplished with IPMA and KOERI as responsible partners. The software demonstrated the seamless integration of diverse components including sensor systems, simulation data, and dissemination hardware. The functionalities that were showcased significantly exceeded the internationally agreed range of capabilities. This included direct Centre-to-Centre communication via software systems between Turkey and Portugal and also the ingestion of eyewitness reports sent from mobile devices via apps. Also the crowd-mapping platform Ushahidi was integrated, which has been repeatedly used to capture eyewitness reports during natural disasters.

Four of the 18 organizations participating in the exercise acted as so-called Candidate Tsunami Watch Providers (CTWP) in four different scenarios. They disseminated warning messages on an international level to the other participants, acting as Tsunami Warning Focal Points (TWFP) and also on the national level as National Tsunami Warning Centers (NTWC), distributing the warning messages to the corresponding Civil Protection Agency (CPA) in charge.

On November 6, 2012, the convention “Transformation of data centers” organized by the Platform “Digital Networked Data” was held in Vienna.

In his opening speech Mag. Michael Wiesmüller of bmvit addressed the significance of technology platforms for the Austrian ICT landscape. DI Christian Derler of Joanneum DIGITAL and board member of the platform commented on the success of the event: “Representatives of Austrian research facilities and centers of excellence had a distinguished chance to discuss with IT-companies and operators of data centers on challenges for the economy that arise from new trends in the ICT such as ‘Big Data’, Cloud Computing and Smart Cities.”

One of the lecturers was Prof. Joachim Wächter from the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences who is the coordinator of the EU-funded project TRIDEC in which DIGITAL has a share.

Second Training Course from October 10 until 14 in Lisbon Portugal at the IPMA Instituto de Meteorologia. After the last stay at the Institute, the developers have adjusted the software because of the evaluation results and necessary implementation of NEAMWave specifications.
During the second journey an enhanced version of the TRIDEC-System was installed and configured. A training course took place which was especially designed for the NEAMWave at the end of November.

Workshop: TRIDEC Natural Crisis Management (NCM) Demonstrator in August 2012, Portugal

From August 17 until 21 a team from the German Research Center in Potsdam traveled to IM Instituto de Meteorologia Lissabon, Portugal. The aims of this visit was the first installation and configuration of the TRIDEC Software and hands on trainings for 8 operators. In addition to this the evaluation of the tsunami demonstrator by the trained operators of the Departamento de Sismologia e Geofisica has taken place. Finally future activities and schedules in the TRIDEC project, the implementations of relevant features and content in the software and the use for the NeamWave were discussed.

Asian natural hazard management specialists show their interest in TRIDEC

On Sept. 18, a full scale demonstration of the NCM was held in Potsdam at GFZ for a distinguished delegation of governmental natural hazard management specialists from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Thailand for the purpose of preparing negotiations for the implementation in the Indian Ocean area. Support from the German Foreign Office is gratefully acknowledged.

TRIDEC and iProd start dialogue on technologies

The projects TRIDEC and iProd (http://www.iprod-project.eu/) are both focusing on the fields of Reasoning & Information Exploitation and Knowledge Discovery & Management within the range of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) activities. While the projects develop solutions for different fields (crisis early warning system frameworks for TRIDEC, product development for iProd), both will benefit on the technical level from a discussion of technologies applied and lessons learned.
