Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute – KOERI
The Kandilli Observatory, which was established in 1868, for meteorological, astronomical and seismological observations, was annexed to the Bogazici University and given an institutional academic status as Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KOERI) in 1982. KOERI today has evolved into a multidisciplinary earthquake research organization providing graduate education in three departments namely Earthquake Engineering, Geophysics and Geodesy. It also embodies National Earthquake Monitoring Centre, Belbasi Nuclear Tests Monitoring Centre, Istanbul Earthquake Rapid Response and Early Warning System and Meteorology, Astronomy and Geomagnetism Laboratories. KOERI enjoys close ties and exchange of students and faculty with relevant institutions in Europe, USA and Japan.
Relevant project experience:
KOERI is hosting the National Tsunami Warning Centre (NTWC) and is also a Candidate Tsunami Watch Provider (CTWP) under the framework of UNESCO/IOC-ICG for the Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation System in the North Eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and Connected Seas (ICG/NEAMTWS). KOERI has undertaken and is currently involved in several EU-FP 6 and EU-FP 7 projects including NERIES, SAFER, TRANSFER, LESSLOSS, SHARE and SERIES.
Specific role in TRIDEC:
KOERI is involved in WP 2 (End-User Requirements and Scenario Definition), WP 6 (Natural Crisis Management) and WP 8 (Dissemination and Exploitation). In WP 2, KOERI mainly contributes in the identification of the end-user requirement together with the definition of a set of mandatory and recommended standards for the project. In WP 6, KOERI will contribute to the conceptual design of the system, development of application components, prototype test-bed and evaluation and validation studies.
